Sight Word Activity Ideas

Sight words (or high frequency words) are words that must be recognized by sight (either because they are irregular or because they are used a lot in text).  Here are some ideas on what you can do to review sight words in the classroom.  Check out my Home School Connection for ideas parents can use at home!  The links below are either to direct files, links, or other Blog posts under the same topic.

  • Bingo Template (Google Doc) - Make your own copy, type in your sight words, print out and play!
  • Follow the Path Game - go here to print out pre-made board games, or download the template to create your own!
  • Slap Jack - (got idea from "Guided Reading Made Easy" by Kristen Smith) - write sight words students need to review or words from a guided reading book on index cards.  Spread the cards out in front of students.  Say a word, the student who slaps it first gets the card.  Once all the cards have been collected, have students read the cards they 'won.'
    • Tip - laminate a set of index cards, then use dry erase or wet erase to write the words on the cards.  This helps you avoid having to store tons of flashcards.
